The rumour was that both were close friends and served together in the Soviet Army during the Soviet-Afghan War (1979-1989). They unfortunately had to go against each other in the early stages of First Chechen War (1994-1996). Colonel Ivan "Alik" Savin along with his 1000 men of the 131st Maikop Brigade were killed during a 60 hours encirclement in Grozny, capital city of Chechnya. Only a dozen of them managed to escape under the darkness of night.
