Its because the wheels were down. I was watching a video on Ailine Disasters on Discovery Wings a couple of years ago and they said when you make an emergency landing to never put the whells down because its like slamming on the breaks from 200mph to 0mph in 1 second. But its a natural human panic reaction. When your going to crash land on water the thought of not lowering the landing gear brings chills. If you watch the Tom Hanks movie 'Castaway', right before they crash in the water you'll hear the pilot say 'landing gear down' and the plane breaks apart. Landing gear wheels on planes and cause about 20% air drag when they are not up, which gets worse as the airspeed increases.
