The court also released a recording of a 911 call made by Mr. Pelosi while the intruder was in the house, shortly after he broke in and awakened Mr. Pelosi. In addition, the court released Capitol Police surveillance footage of the Pelosi residence and an audio recording of the police interrogation of the suspect, David DePape. The video of the attack captures the moments when officers approached the home, entered it and found the assailant and Mr. Pelosi standing calmly, each with a hand on a large hammer. After the police demanded that they drop it, the intruder wrested control of the hammer, raised it above his head and slammed it into Mr. Pelosi’s skull, though the impact itself occurred off camera. As officers tried to subdue the assailant, Mr. Pelosi lay motionless on his side. Mr. Pelosi spent six days in a San Francisco hospital and underwent surgery for a skull fracture. The suspect, Mr. DePape, faces numerous felony charges in state court, including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. He also faces federal charges of attempted kidnapping of a federal officer and assault on a family member of a federal official. If convicted, he would face the possibility of life in prison. He has pleaded not guilty, and the next hearing in the case is scheduled for Feb. 23, when a trial date will be set. Here’s what else to know: Judge Stephen M. Murphy, who is overseeing the criminal case against Mr. DePape, ordered the release of the evidence after a consortium of media outlets petitioned the court to make it available to the public. The judge did so over the objections of both the prosecution and the defense. Mr. DePape, who was 42 at the time of his arrest, told detectives he was on a mission to capture and interrogate Ms. Pelosi, and that he wanted to break her kneecaps if she “lied” to him. Ms. Pelosi was in Washington at the time of the attack. A top congressional Democrat who openly confronted Republican figures, she had long been the target of right-wing attacks. Some conservative figures mocked her husband’s beating, which occurred in her final year as speaker of the House, when she was third in the presidential line of succession. The attack, which came 11 days before the midterm elections, revealed security vulnerabilities for members of Congress, heightened fears of politically motivated violence and spawned numerous conspiracy theories and rumors.
