For anyone too young to remember his name, Agee was a POS traitor, who died in infamy in Cuba. He has no credibility.
That being said, I think the US has always placed friendship with the US over democracy, as well it should. Every country should prioritize other countries being friendly. Some Islamic extremist countries got that way by popular vote. Iran under the Shah wasn't a bad place to live, if you didn't oppose the Shah.
