It's likely a social psychological disorder.
Very similar to what led to the Salem witch trials... where teenage girls started duplicating bizarre behavior they'd observed in others.
Teenagers (largely girls) who "contract" this disorder tend to repeat the specific words, outbursts, etc. that they've heard others use.
