In the video, Ukrainian soldiers retreat rear from their position, which is being stormed by Russian fighters, but they are met with fire from a barrier detachment.

I dont think its that easy, most probably the rank behind didnt se what kind of soldiers that were storming the position. There is quite a distance. most probably just thougth that the ukrainians died and the front then got overwhelmed with russian forces. Better just shoot than be sorry later.
same tactics were used by the Red Army im WWII: throw more lifes at the enemy than he has bullets. Keep the own bullets for those who try to run away from it.
Must be a slavic thing.
