Maybe the alternative back in the US was a decrepit old peoples home, so he escaped and went to war. Was probably more exciting than fighting a 90 yo for the TV remote and the armchair with the least stains and holes in it.
Imagine facing going into a Russian prison for a long stretch at that age as a foreigner, an American no less...
