Details seem sketchy at this point, an investigation is to get underway. The 85-metre HMNZS Manawanui was about a mile off the coast of Upolu, a Samoan island, when it ran aground. Several attempts were made to free the ship from the reef, but but were unsuccessful. Seventy five passengers and crew were evacuated by life raft during the night, a move that authorities say likely prevented loss of life. Several from the ship were injured and were being attended at a hospital.

After everyone was safely ashore, the listing ship caught fire, (possibly from leaking fuel) then capsized and sank. The crew and passengers were put aboard flights to Aukland, New Zealand, the original port. Authorities are working together to assess the environmental impacts of the incident. The United Kingdom and Australia offered help to salvage the ship.
