Elephants are responsible for approximately 500 human fatalities annually worldwide. In India, elephant-related incidents result in over 100 deaths each year, while in Sri Lanka, about 80 people die annually due to human-elephant conflicts. These conflicts often arise from habitat loss and fragmentation, leading elephants to enter human settlements in search of food, which can result in dangerous encounters.

I guess there were no trains or electrical wires nearby?
