The event occurred this Thursday in a simultaneous raid of the ADF in the villages of Ndalya, Kthwakasoya and Mataha, located in the Walese vonkutu region, in the territory of Irumu, in the province of Ituri, according to the convention for respect for the respect of the Human Rights (CRDH). We have 28 civilians killed provisionally, including 23 in the village of Kathwakasoya, 4 in Mataha and others in Ndalya, CRDH coordinator Christophe Munyanderu told EFE by telephone, stating that the attackers set fire to two motorcycles. This incident occurs while the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC), in collaboration with the Uganda Army, are increasing patrols against ADF and other armed groups present in Ituri, a gold-rich area. The attack occurred after the bodies of 19 people allegedly killed by the ADF were found Tuesday in a village in the neighbouring province of North Kivu. ADF is a militia of Ugandan origin, but is currently based in the neighbouring Congolese provinces of North Kivu and Ituri, where they often carry out attacks and terrorize the population. Ugandan authorities also accuse the group of organizing attacks within its territory and, in November 2021, the Ugandan and DRC armies began a joint military operation. Its objectives are diffuse, beyond a possible link with IS, which is sometimes attributed its actions. Although the United Nations Security Council experts found no evidence of direct IS support for the ADF, the United States has identified them since March 2021 as a terrorist organization affiliated with the jihadist group. Since 1998, the eastern DRC has been plunged into a conflict fuelled by more than a hundred rebel groups and the Army, despite the presence of the UN peace mission (Monusco).
