On February 7, 2009, Lusk crashed while attempting to land a "Hart Attack Backflip" in a freestyle motocross competition in San Jose, Costa Rica. Lusk under rotated the flip, causing his front wheel to strike the landing and eject Lusk head first off the bike.[3] He sustained head injuries, severe brain damage and a possible spinal cord injury.[7] On February 10, 2009, he entered into cardiac and respiratory failure at Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia Hospital in San José, Costa Rica.[7]
At the time of his death, Lusk lived in Temecula, California. He is survived by his wife, Lauren.
