When asked for identification, 48-year-old Joshua Coffey of South Bend abruptly fled on foot, leading the deputy into a nearby park. Body camera footage later revealed Coffey appearing to surrender before suddenly drawing a firearm and firing two shots at Deputy Landon. The deputy, initially armed with a taser, managed to transition to his service weapon and returned fire, fatally striking Coffey. Moments later, Deputy Sabrina LaRatta arrived as the first back up unit to arrive at the scene and found Coffey to be deceased with the firearm in his hand with his finger on the trigger. Meanwhile, the unidentified woman who was with Coffey at the start of the encounter has since been located, but further details remain under wraps due to the open case. Deputy Landon is currently on administrative leave, following standard protocol for officer-involved shootings.
