Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) most often refers to a common, contagious viral illness in humans, usually children, called Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD), which causes fever, sore throat, and a rash on the hands, feet, and mouth. Alternatively, FMD is a severe, highly contagious disease that affects livestock like cattle and pigs, and not humans. For the human illness, symptoms include a mild fever, sore throat, and painful sores that can appear on the tongue, inside the mouth, and on the hands and feet, sometimes with blisters. The illness typically resolves on its own within 7 to 10 days, but symptoms can be managed with pain relievers, staying hydrated, and practicing good hygiene to prevent its spread.
