Knoxville, Tennessee — On the morning of January 28, 2026, Knoxville Police Department (KPD) Special Crimes Unit detectives acted on credible information that a missing and endangered 15-year-old girl was inside a North Park Apartments unit on Tillery Road with 46-year-old Angel Melendez, who was unrelated to her. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation had issued an Endangered Child Alert for the girl the previous day, January 27. Warrants were on file charging Melendez with concealing a runaway, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and theft of a firearm. At approximately 10:25 a.m., personnel from the Special Operations Squad (SOS) approached the apartment to safely recover the girl and arrest Melendez. They knocked, announced their presence for an extended period, and entered with the property owner's consent. Shortly after entering, SOS members located Melendez and the girl in a small bedroom. When confronted, Melendez retrieved a handgun and pointed it at the officers. In response, SOS Lt. Shawn Shreve and Sgt. Chris Hutton fired, striking Melendez multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Seconds after the shooting, the missing juvenile struck Officer Terry Crowe in the head with a large knife. Officer Crowe was wearing a helmet and was not injured by the blow. The girl was safely recovered, evaluated at UT Medical Center, and subsequently charged with assault. Show more
