On November 6, 2022, at approximately 3:40 p.m., police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a man threatening a woman with a knife at the intersection of Fulton Avenue and Lafayette Avenue in West Baltimore. Officer Zachary Rutherford and police trainee Michael Hazel were the first to arrive and immediately requested backup after observing a dangerous situation. The suspect, identified as Tyree Moorehead, was holding a large kitchen knife while standing over a woman lying on the ground. Rutherford exited the patrol vehicle with his firearm drawn and ran toward Moorehead, repeatedly shouting commands, including “Get down,” as captured on body-camera footage. The encounter escalated within seconds as officers attempted to stop what they believed was an immediate threat to the woman’s life, and lethal force was used.
