Despite the Motor Vehicles Act imposing heavy fines of up to ₹15,000 and two years of imprisonment for repeat drunk driving offenses, the lack of consistent night-time enforcement remains a critical gap. To combat this “killer on wheels” culture, the Indian government and institutions like IIT Madras recently launched a 2026 universal driver rating system to track behavior and reward safe driving.
