The first officer on scene noticed the man who was the subject of the call, saw him run through the complex and began following him. As additional officers arrived, the man was seen carrying a rifle and refused repeated commands to stop running. The man continued to move to an area with people and children, and this is when the officer-involved shooting occurred. After the man was injured by gunfire, officers safely approached him, removed the rifle and took him into custody. Medical aid was provided until the Phoenix Fire Department arrived and transported him to the hospital, where he later died. The deceased man has been identified as 40-year-old Jason Anthony Arrieta. The officers involved in this shooting are assigned to the Maryvale-Estrella Mountain Precinct and have approximately six and 18 years of service with the department. No officers or other civilians were injured, officials said.
