According to reports from early April 2026, Yasmin Chowdhury (48), a Bangladeshi single mother living in the United States, was fatally attacked with a hammer at a convenience store and gas station along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Fort Myers, Florida. Authorities say the incident occurred around 7:14 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, when the suspect, Rolbert Joachin (40), described as a transient with a reported history of mental illness, attempted to enter the locked store. Surveillance footage allegedly shows him striking Chowdhury’s vehicle windshield with a hammer. When she exited the store to confront him, he reportedly attacked her multiple times in the head. Chowdhury collapsed at the scene and was pronounced dead at approximately 7:27 a.m. Police say the suspect fled but was located and arrested several hours later by the Fort Myers Police Department. He has been charged with homicide and criminal mischief. Investigators indicated there may have been a prior dispute involving the suspect, who was reportedly upset during an earlier visit to the location after entering an incorrect PIN at an ATM.
