Corey Ruiz, 38, was a violent career criminal with a rap sheet that includes dozens of convictions: battery to law enforcement, resisting officers (including causing bodily harm), robbery, strangulation, threats against police, vehicle theft, drug crimes, and more. He had recently been released and was out absconding supervision. On July 22, police responded to reports of someone checking car doors and stealing bikes. Ruiz fled on a bicycle. When officers caught up and tried to arrest him, a struggle broke out in the middle of a busy intersection. He pulled a fixed-blade knife and stabbed an officer. A Taser failed. The injured officer then fired, killing Ruiz. Bystander video captured the chaotic end of the fight. And what does the left do? Protests. Vigils. Ben Crump shows up calling it an “execution.” Demands the officer be charged. Outrage at the people who risk their lives to keep the streets from being ruled by guys like Ruiz. Suddenly the violent felon with a long history of attacking cops is the victim, and the officer who just got knifed is the villain who must answer for not performing perfectly under lethal threat. This is the pattern every single time. Career criminals who harm, steal, resist, and try to stab the thin blue line get endless excuses, context, and defense. The people who actually protect you—the ones who run toward the danger instead of away from it—get held to an impossible standard of perfection while being second-guessed, demonized, and investigated as the real problem.
