The incident highlights the serious dangers of standing too close to active railway tracks, as the size and speed of a locomotive can make it difficult to accurately judge a safe distance. Railway operators such as CPKC strongly urge spectators to remain at least 10 metres (33 feet) away from active tracks when viewing or photographing trains.
