NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio — A terrifying moment for a North Olmsted mother of four was caught on a Ring doorbell camera. Officials said the incident, which ended in the fatal shooting of a robbery suspect by police, started around 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon outside the AT&T store on West River Road in Elyria. According to police, the suspect — who has since been identified as 37-year-old John Johnson, of Lorain — robbed a Brinks truck driver at gunpoint. Johnson then took off in a car and was eventually found in Lorain, where police say he led officers on a dangerous chase through multiple cities. The suspect showed no regard for the safety of motorists or pedestrians in the area traveling at speeds over 100 miles an hour," Elyria Police Chief James Welsh said Wednesday. The chase ultimately ended in North Olmsted, where police disabled Johnson's car using spike strips. Johnson then ran into an apartment complex on Claireshire Drive, where authorities say he took a random woman hostage at gunpoint. The Ring video starts with the woman and her family appearing to bring several items into their home amid the sound of police sirens. Suddenly, a man comes running up the driveway. "Get in there. Go. Go in the house," said the suspect to the woman. Approximately 10 seconds later, a police officer is seen running toward the house yelling, "Back up! Back up! Move! Move!" to two of the children who were still outside. The officer then kicks open the door. "Get out of the house! Get out of the house now!" the officer yells, before more children are seen walking out. As more police officers arrive, including a K-9 unit, the officer is heard shouting orders to the suspect before the video ends. The suspect, Johnson, was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital before being pronounced dead. Show more
