Neanderthals actually had a larger cranial capacity for their size than homo-sapiens. That's of course not the only reason we are more intelligent. We also had about 1,800 generations that had to survive a colder European climate. Our dumber and less cooperative ancestors didn't survive to pass on their genes, theirs obviously did.
