This incident started when the suspect, later identified as 19-year-old Vega, threw rocks at vehicles and threatened a man with a knife at a business near 35th Avenue and Washington street. The victim at the business called 911 and reported that Vega was armed and threatened him with a knife. Patrol officers were dispatched to the location of the call and located Vega walking on 35th Avenue. As the officers approached Vega, they saw a knife in his hand. Officers gave repeated commands to drop the knife, which Vega ignored as he walked away from the officers. One officer deployed a taser two times, but it was not effective. Vega stopped walking backwards, and then moved quickly toward the officers. One officer discharged her firearm, striking Vega. Vega fell to the ground but still had the knife in his hand and officers continued to give him commands to drop the knife. Vega eventually complied and threw the knife aside, allowing officers to safely approach. Vega was arrested and first aid was provided until Phoenix Fire Personnel arrived and transported him to a local hospital for treatment. The knife used by Vega was recovered on scene. Show more
