Officers tried to get Alexander to put his sword down. He then went out on his back patio and refused to step inside from the porch area. Alexander told officers he had PTSD and was not taking his medication. Officers at the scene said he was clearly agitated and upset while speaking to them. At that point, Officers Nicholas Gomez, David Pangan, Justin Terry and Gregory Tracy formed an “immediate action team,” which made contact with Alexander and tried to talk him down and de-escalate the situation. After a few minutes, Alexander went into his home, then came out onto the patio again holding a .22 caliber rifle. He pointed the rifle at the team, causing all four police officers, along with Metro Sergeant Matthew Borse to fire their weapons. Alexander then went back inside and came out again later, holding the rifle again and pointing it at officers. Police once again fired their weapons at Alexander. Alexander went back inside, and SWAT and crisis negotiators responded to the scene. After a few hours, they took him into custody after tazing him. Alexander suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital following the incident. Metro Police say Alexander’s rifle was hit by two of the rounds that officers fired. Metro says Alexander suffered an injury from bullet fragments on one of his hands. Metro Police fired 34 shots in total during the incident. Sergeant Matthew Borse fired 15 rounds on sight. Officer Nicholas Gomez fired 7 rounds on sight. Officer David Pangan fired 5 rounds. Officer Justin Terry fired 6 rounds. Officer Gregory Tracy also fired 1 round. None of those rounds hit Alexander, but he was injured by shots that appeared to hit his rifle. Metro says Alexander had a fully-loaded rifle, with one bullet in the chamber and eight more in reserve, but he did not fire any shots in the encounter. Below is a picture of the 27-inch samurai sword he had on his person during the encounter. For this incident, Alexander was charged with seven counts of “assault on a protected person with a deadly weapon.” He is also charged for being a “prohibited person in possession of a firearm.” Prior to this incident, Alexander was already a convicted felon for weapons-related charges.
