Three of the severed heads were left on the hood of one of the vehicles. According to local reports, municipal police reported receiving calls about a shooting at around 1425 hours that lasted approximately thirty minutes. Preliminary reports suggest that the five gunmen were traveling aboard a Chevrolet Suburban and a Chevrolet Aveo before they were ambushed by another armed group. Officers with the National Guard (GN) and municipal police arrived at the scene to conduct investigations. Local reports speculate that the confrontations may have been a result of the battle between La Gente Nueva faction of the Cartel de Sinaloa (CDS) and La Linea, the armed wing of the Cartel de Juarez (CDJ).
