This seems to be somewhere in the UK. The other thing you have to be weary of is underground pipes and electrical lines, especially when working close to a fence. I wouldn't feel comfortable with a pickaxe unless I scanned the ground first.
Guess he'll look and see if he's clear next time he swings a mattock.
