Matthew Dobbs told reporters Friday evening. Homicide detectives investigate all shootings by police. Dobbs said the officers chased the man, who cut through bushes as he ran onto a frontage road along the east side of 54th Street. The frontage road is where one of the officers caught up with the man, Dobbs said. The two began to fight. According to Dobbs, “When (the man) was pulling at the officer’s gun, he broke the entire holster, with the firearm inside, from the officer’s belt.” The officer who lost his gun “alerted the other officer,” who shot the man one time, killing him, Dobbs said. The man, whose identity was not known, but who was described as Hispanic and in his 30s or 40s, died at the scene. The officers were not injured.
